| The aim of the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin is to promote and improve the environmental protection and to enhance environmental awareness in the city of Berlin. Financed by the city of Berlin, the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin has funded about 1,000 environmental projects with more than 2 million euros, since the senate of Berlin ratified the act for the foundation in 1981. The projects involve the protection of species and habitats and environmental education.
We would like to briefly introduce you to some current projects and ongoing programmes of our foundation. Unfortunately, this is the only information our site offers you in English. We apologize for that. For further information please contact us by sending an email to mail@stiftung-naturschutz.de or calling +49 30 263940.
Every year, the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin awards the “Berliner Naturschutzpreis” (Berlin Award for Nature Conservation) in the categories “Ehrenpreis” (honours award) and “Projektpreis” (project award). With the award the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin honours people or organisations that have made a significant contribution for nature conservation in the city of Berlin.
To provide the media with comprehensive information about our work we have set up a professional media service. With press releases, newsletters, annual reports and a wide range of print and web publications we keep the public up-to-date on the foundation’s environmental projects and news. By informing the public about nature conversation and its relation to agriculture, tourism etc., our media service also aims to change consumer attitudes and behaviour. Feel free to search our internet site for information and press releases (only in German) or contact our press office on +49 30 263940 for your inquiries.
Berlin is one of Germany´s greenest cities. To give people the opportunity to discover Berlin’s fascinating nature and environment the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin has launched a new yearly event called “Langer Tag der StadtNatur” (Day of Urban Nature) in 2007. The “Langer Tag der StadtNatur” lasts 26 hours and opens the doors to parks, botanical gardens and scientific institutions as well as adventure play grounds, centres for environmental education, nature paths and private gardens all over the city for the visitors and inhabitants of Berlin. The “Langer Tag der StadtNatur” is the biggest event of its kind in Germany. On July, 5th and 6th of 2008, the second “Langer Tag der StadtNatur” will take place with around 400 different activities.
One of our largest projects is organising the voluntary environmental year for young adults (Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr, FÖJ) in Berlin. The programme gives about 190 young people the opportunity to work in an environmental institution for one year. From landscape gardening, biological research labs to political organisations, volunteers are employed in a variety of workplaces. Here, they learn more about nature conservation as well as gaining valuable work experience. On joined seminars the volunteers share their experiences with each other, discuss current environmental issues and create networks. Taking a voluntary environmental year may help young adults to decide on what kind of career they want to pursue in the future. The environmental voluntary year can also be completed as a substitute for the civil service, which is compulsory in Germany.
Learning more about nature and how to preserve it also plays an important role in the work of the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin. Especially children should have the opportunity to discover nature and learn about the environment. With the booklet „Green learning environments” (Grüne Lernorte - centres for environmental education) we inform about all institutions in Berlin offering environmental education courses for children outside of the regular school curriculum. You can order the booklet online or by calling +49 30 263940 for 6 Euros (plus 2,50 Euros postage).
With the environmental library (Umweltbibliothek) the Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin offers a broad information service. Visitors can browse through more than 260 different magazines and 3,500 books and find information on most subjects and issues relevant in environmental debates und sciences.
The Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin is located in the heart of Berlin.
